There is a fascinating story about Śani in the Ramayana. When King Rāvaṇa succeeded in gaining control over all nine planets, he installed them face down on the nine steps leading to his throne. Each morning, he would step on their backs to ascend his throne, insulting and humiliating them.

One day, Sage Nārada visited Rāvaṇa. Upon seeing the plight of the nine planets, Nārada asked Śani, the mightiest and most fearsome of the planets, how he could tolerate such an insult. Śani replied that, lying face down, he was powerless, but if he could cast his gaze upon Rāvaṇa, everything would change.

After showing Nārada around his magnificent palace, the proud Rāvaṇa asked for the sage’s opinion. Nārada, with his characteristic wit, praised the palace but pointed out one flaw. “How can Rāvaṇa truly enjoy the pleasure of subduing the nine planets when they lie face down?” he asked. “Would it not be more satisfying if they lay face up so that you could see the discomfort on their faces as you stepped on their chests?”

The suggestion delighted Rāvaṇa, and he immediately ordered his staff to turn the planets onto their backs. The moment this was done, Śani’s gaze fell upon Rāvaṇa. Instantly, Rāvaṇa’s reason deserted him. Within months, he kidnapped Sita, the wife of Lord Rāma, leading to Lord Rāma’s invasion of Lanka. Ultimately, Rāvaṇa and his entire family were destroyed.

This story illustrates the immense power of Śani’s gaze and serves as a reminder of the dangers of arrogance and disrespecting cosmic forces. Even Rāvaṇa, a mighty king and devoted worshiper of Lord Śiva, was not immune to the consequences of his pride.

Remedy

As we saw in these cases, Kaṇṭaka Śani is a very dangerous Doṣa. However, for some huge event, Kaṇṭaka must be repeated in some divisional chart. In these cases, we consider only the exact moment, but after every Śani attack, the person needs a long time to heal the wounds. After all, Śani is Kāla – Time.

The best remedial measure for this Doṣa lies in worshiping Rudra, the devata of Mangala.

The following is an extract from Śrī Rudram. It should be recited eleven times every morning (after bathing and sitting while facing east).
